Prepare DICOM imaging for research and AI workflows.
DICOM anonymisation workflows prepare imaging for an agreed research, sharing or AI purpose. Nexus supports metadata transformation and de-identification as part of a connected imaging pathway, with controls defined around the receiving workflow and project policy.
Establish which identifiers and acquisition details the destination needs, which attributes must change and how participants and timepoints will be represented. Keep the transformation policy specific to the project and validate it using representative data.
02
Preserve useful imaging relationships
DICOM studies can contain related series, structured reports and references between objects. Plan how identifiers and UIDs are handled so transformation does not break the relationships needed for interpretation, longitudinal analysis or downstream processing.
03
Check metadata and pixels
Deleting familiar patient tags is not a complete validation process. Assess private attributes, free text, embedded documents and identifying information visible in image pixels. Agree inspection, redaction and review steps for the modalities and object types in scope.
04
Connect collection to review
Build the preparation step into the route from participating sites to the receiving archive, imaging core laboratory or AI platform. Agree quality checks, reconciliation, authorised access and how incomplete or unsuitable submissions will be resolved.
Common questions
Before we connect.
Are anonymisation and pseudonymisation the same?
No. Pseudonymisation replaces identifiers while a separately controlled linkage may remain. An anonymisation process aims to prevent identification. The project’s governance team should establish the required outcome and how it will be assessed.
Does changing DICOM tags remove all identifying information?
No. Identifying information can also appear in private attributes, free text, image pixels and related documents. Validation needs to cover the actual dataset and agreed destination, including checks beyond the standard patient tags.
Can this form part of a clinical trial workflow?
Yes. Nexus can connect retrieval, transformation and routing around a trial imaging pathway. The protocol, participant mapping, timepoints, quality checks and receiving systems should be agreed as part of the project.
